Concise comment on the educational process
I am at work and
I have learned how to get here and work
and beautiful people are learning
how to sell things and themselves and each other
and bums
are learning to play guitar on the corner and how
to drink life
and artists
are learning how to get away
with murder and still surffer and roaches
are learning how to crawl into my world
and most people are learning how to crawl
out
and somewhere someone in some alley is
learning about fear or the
goings-on of alleys
and somewhere else some students
are trying to learn
Chinese or patience or fashion
or cheating
and families of white folks everywhere
are learning how to make television into real
life
and in prisons and jails
the ones inside
the cages have learned or have
not or can't
and everywhere people are learning
to define themselves with
cigarettes automobiles checking accounts
to identify themselves with their
town, football team, history
I am learning to walk again, really
but not on my
feet or dreams.
